Introduction

SharePoint 2013 comes with many additions to help increase the usability and usefulness of mobile devices with SharePoint. There are 6 key new features that will encourage end users to more actively engage with SharePoint

1.   Optimized OOB Mobile Browser Experience

What is it?

The out of the box viewing experience in SP 2013 has been optimized to provide a cleaner, more modern look and feel. This replaces the previous look and feel, and provides a cleaner, easier to read interface

Why is it Engaging?

Users used to working on mobile devices will find the easier to read, easier to use interface more intuitive. Previously SharePoint’s out of the box mobile list view had less screen real estate for actual content and was dated looking.

2.   Device Channels

What are they?

Device channels can render a single published SharePoint site in multiple designs to accommodate different device targets.

Why are they Engaging?

When businesses can create mobile specific content areas on their site as opposed to an “all or nothing” type of view, you can strategize what content is most useful to users accessing your portal from a mobile device, and give them content that is more targeted to their specific use case. Auto-detect your device and allows for multi-device support IOS, Windows 8, Android

3.   Push Notifications

What are they?

A push notification service on a SharePoint site can be enabled to send device updates such as a tile or toast notification to a Windows Phone device.

Like “Alerts” in 2010, users can receive notifications and updates on their mobile devices from SharePoint applications.

Why are they Engaging?

Push notifications allow business users to receive and maintain updates and alerts separate from email accounts, giving more noticeable updates to users.

4.   Geolocation Field Type

What is it?

The Geolocation field type can be used in mobile and full browser SharePoint for map views from custom Apps and Lists.

Why Is It Engaging?

The field can be used to map territories, offices, and other business related uses in a more meaningful visualization.

5.   BI Visualization Expansion

What is it?

SharePoint 2013 allows users to view dashboard content such as PerformancePoint 2013, Excel Services 2013, & Reporting Services 2012  reports on tablet devices.

Why is it Engaging?

Business users will be able to more easily access reports and data visualizations that will help them make decisions.

6.   Office Web Apps

What are they?

Updated Office Web Apps give users the ability to view Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents in mobile devices.

Why are they Engaging?

Business users will be able to remotely attend PowerPoint presentations, and sort columns and create PivotTables in Excel on mobile devices, helping them be more engaged in meetings and presentations by interacting with documents.
